Men’s Underwear Do’s, Don’ts & Everything in Between

Underwear. Some men wear them, and others do not. And those who do may wear the plain white briefs that their dad (and his dad) wore, while others opt for feeling a little more risqué with a red G-string. Have you shopped for men’s underwear recently? There are so many choices, from thongs and jockstraps to boxers and briefs – and a plethora of others. In a room with five men, each could be wearing a different type of underwear! The truth is that men’s underwear is not at all like it used to be.

Perhaps, therefore, so many find underwear that feels good – and they stick with it. But is your underwear good for you? Are they suitable for your manhood? Regardless of your preference or your history with this undergarment, there are a few things that you should know. Just like with nearly everything in life, there is a right and a wrong way when it comes to men’s underwear. If you want to be comfortable and want to make sure your family jewels are protected, you need to keep reading.

The Dangers of Sweat

Your balls get sweaty. No matter how hard you try to keep them dry and crisp – it is going to happen when you keep them shoved under layers of clothing in a dark place. Of course, sweating also comes from exercising or wearing pants or underwear that are too small for the size of your testicles. All this may be natural, but it is not healthy to leave them all hot and wet.

And it indeed is not comfortable. Leaving your privates soaking in this sweaty environment can lead to even more significant problems – things like chafing, itching, bacterial infections, boils, and fungal infections like jock itch. While you can’t stop the sweating, you can take measures to protect your boys:

  • Wear properly fitting underwear – especially pouch underwear made from a breathable fabric.
  • Practice good hygiene.
  • Consider manscaping your groin area.

If you get too sweaty, change your underwear. Leaving them on could lead to some of the ailments we just talked about.

Change It Often

Believe it or not, most men do not change their underwear as often as they should. A lot is going on in life – things to do places to go, and so on. And, hey, if you don’t get sweaty or dirty, why change, right? Research shows that a large chunk of the male population does not change their underwear every day.

They only change them every two to three days. If this statistic grosses you out, pat yourself on the back. Guys, it would be best if you changed your underwear every single day, whether or not they are dirty, sweaty, stinky, or anyone is going to see them. Doing so is all part of good grooming and personal hygiene.

No Commando

Not wearing any underwear may feel free – and cooler with less sweat, but that doesn’t mean you should do it. For many years, going commando has been a thing man chooses to do, not believing there is any harm. However, medical professionals will tell you that you should consider not ditching underwear for good reasons:

  • Your manhood is sensitive – and denim, for example, can hurt and cause chafing.
  • You leave yourself exposed to germs and unhygienic conditions.
  • More challenging to hide sweat stains or other wet spots.
  • Put on underwear, gents. It’s the right thing to do.

The Dreaded Underwear Line

It’s not just the ladies who worry about the underwear line. If you have ever worn any pair of pants or shorts with boxer briefs or boxers, then you probably know just how awkward it looks – and feels – when they bunch up. It doesn’t matter how careful you pull your pants up, a little twist or turn, and you may be all discombobulated again. Sure, this type of underwear may keep you from having a thick underwear line, but they aren’t ideal for pants where underwear lines matter.

And let’s not even talk about the horrid looks you will get if you try to wear good ol’ briefs with your skinny jeans. Yikes! To get dressed and have a smooth finish, you need to opt for something that will not get bunched up – and that will not have a thick line showing through. What are your options? Jockstraps, G-strings, and thongs are all perfect choices to allow you to have confidence as your butt shines. Maybe you are a man that likes nothing more than loose-fitting pants, whether on the field or in the boardroom.

The idea of having pants or shorts that are form-fitting may make you cringe. It’s not your style, and that’s ok. But you never know what the future holds – maybe you will find yourself as a groomsman in your best friend’s outdoor wedding, and you must wear some skinny jeans. Or maybe your future spouse prefers being able to see that cute butt of yours. The more informed you are, the more it can benefit your future. Know when your trusty boxer briefs will work just fine or when you should opt for a jockstrap, thong, or G-string instead.

Don’t Get Stuck

Many of us are creatures of habit. It’s like how you feel about your favorite blue pen at work or only using Heinz ketchup on your fries. We get it. We find something that works for us, and we stick with it. The same goes for underwear. Here’s the thing, though – we need change. We need a fresh makeover at times to keep us feeling good and keep our confidence soaring high. Let go of the adage, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” and try something new.

Life is too short – it is time to feel good about yourself. You may even surprise yourself about how a new type of underwear can transform your day. Underwear should always be a part of your wardrobe – and it should never take a backseat. Invest annually in underwear that feels good and keeps your manhood healthy and happy. It may just change your life.
